Welcome back blog readers it’s been a couple of months since my last confession but shitloads has happened, and not much at the same time. So where do I start? Oh yea, that’s right, I won Adelaide Comedian of the year for 2013 boom!!! And the Adelaide comedy jesters’ jester, which is voted for by the comics boom!!! But it has taken me 10 years of doing stand-up comedy to figure out who I am as a comic and to finally start having some success!
It all started 10 years ago when I entered Triple J’s Raw Comedy competition. The year was 2004, I just passed my evaluation to become an airport security officer and purchased my first pet lizard a black headed monitor called Eddy. Black headed monitors are a breed of lizard; beautiful to look at but hard to tame. The same could be said about stand-up comedy which is weird because a few years later I tried to combine the two but back to the story…
I had always been the funny kid in school and especially funny on the piss. So one night after getting home from a successful night on the turps, I chuck the radio on and hear an ad for Raw Comedy. I think fuck yea I could do that, so I hijacked the nearest computer and boom I was in the comp!!!
After realising what I had done I had to write 5 mins of stuff in the next 2 weeks, which at the time seemed like a monumental task but those who know me now would agree I can’t even say hello under 5mins anymore. I wrote my set entirely about cricket and it went amazingly well. It was my first taste of what I now consider my home ground, the Rhino Room.
I got to the state semi-final where I did what follows many new comics amazing first gig and that was to bomb in my second in front of 300 people crammed into PJ O’Briens. That gig is where I met four of my future best mates in comedy. There was the eventual state winner Ben Darsow, future One Mic Stand founder Michael Bowley, the nicest guy in comedy Jason Pestell and Craig Egan, a local comic who had just been handed the reins to what would become Adelaide Comedy. After the gig Craig came up to me and said he thought I had something and would I like to continue getting up, I said yes and he has had a major influence on me continuing to follow the comedy dream ever since.
So what happened over the next 10 years you ask well…..got heckled so badly in Canberra at the Green Faces competition that I walked off stage and drunk an entire rider meant for 10 comics by myself…. I saw boobs onstage…… refereed a ladies jelly wrestling match and got boobs in the face……. Got heckled by a car doing burnouts on Australia day……. Appeared on Stand-Up Australia on the Comedy Channel …… met Billy Connelly (which will be in my next blog) performed at the Adelaide Fringe, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Mangrove Hotel in Broome……. I did a show about reptiles with live reptiles with the show resulting in a pregnant lady getting bitten by one of them ……..did a kids show with reptiles resulting in a mum screaming “fuck” in the middle of the show and running out the screaming….. Over the last 10 years I’ve performed in front of massive crowds in small rooms and small crowds in massive rooms treating each gig like it will be the greatest night in my audience’s life …..
It hasn’t happened over night but I keep telling myself it will happen!!
